Just a while ago in early March, I traveled to Kesennuma and Ofunato in the Sanriku region between Miyagi and Iwate prefectures on a photo assignment for the Wall Street Journal: Travel Section to cover the story of the Michinoku Coastal Trail, for which I was responsible for taking the photos on location. I have never been a journalist myself, so it was such an opportunity to contribute to a major news publication like WSJ.

My thoughts on the assignment? It was super exciting. Not only had I never visited both Kesennuma and Ofunato before, but I also got to experience running around thinking about how to take the best photos to match the tone of the story.
And above all, the best part of the assignment was meeting the locals there. As much as the beautiful views I encountered during my visit, the people were even more beautiful — warm and welcoming while at the same time resilient and resourceful.
I had much help during my photo assignment, but special thanks go to Experience Ofunato for assisting me in visiting the locations in Ofunato.
